چکیده

Natural language is full of reinterpretation phenomena which have to be resolved during semantic processing. An important step towards a feasible framework for reinterpretation has been undertaken by Egg (1999), who proposed to model reinterpretation by adding missing information to underspeciied semantic representations. The correctness question for Egg's approach raises another fundamental question on underspeciied representations: How can an underspeciied representation be relaxed without adding unintended readings? In this paper, we give an answer to this question. We formulate a general safety criterion and formalize it based on tree descriptions in the language of dominance constraints. We prove the correctness of our safety criterion and apply it systematically to Egg's model of reinterpretation.

Relaxing Underspecified Semantic Representations for Reinterpretation

Type and sort connicts in semantics are usually resolved by a process of reinterpretation. Recently, Egg (1999) has proposed an alternative account in which connicts are avoided by underspeciication. The main idea is to derive suuciently relaxed underspeciied semantic representations ; addition of reinterpretation operators then simply is further specialization. But in principle, relaxing under...

Underspeciied Japanese Semantics in a Machine Translation System

Semantic representations which are underspeciied with respect to, for example, scope, have recently attracted much attention. Most research in this area has focused on treating English language phenomena in a theoretical fashion. Our paper deviates from this twofold: We take Japanese as the language of our investigations and describe how our ideas about underspeciied Japanese semantics (e.g., o...

Dynamic Semantics and Ambiguity

Ambiguity is one of the most diicult problems in natural language processing. We present a dynamic semantics which gives a formal account of the behavior of ambiguous expressions occurring in a sequence of sentences. Ambiguous sentences are represented in an underspeciied way and the update potential of underspeciied representations is deened. Updating information states with un-derspeciied sem...

The Availability of Partial Scopings in an Underspeciied Semantic Representation

Much of the recent work in computational semantics has addressed the problem of analysing ambiguous sentences; that is, sentences which have more than one possible meaning. A favoured solution has been to represent ambiguous sentences with underspeciied meaning languages which are not committed to any one of the possible meanings, but which allow additional information to be used to determine a...
